Columbia College Advances Inclusive Education Through Neurodiversity Celebration Week
Columbia College brought its campus community together for its annual Neurodiversity Celebration Week, culminating in a March 19, 2026, keynote that explored new pathways to access and equity in higher education. Titled “Redefining Access: Universal Design and AI as Catalysts for Educational Equity,” Dr. Lakshmi Balasubramanian, a Senior Researcher and Lecturer at Stanford University’s Graduate School of Education and recipient of the Walter J. Gores Award for excellence in teaching, emphasized how institutions can move beyond traditional accommodation models.
“Throughout our discussion on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Artificial Intelligence
(AI), there was a palpable excitement in the room about the potential of engaging
with new technology. There was a strong, vocal desire to ensure that our approach
to AI remains careful, ethical, measured, and thoughtful. As we discussed, the key
to safely harnessing this technology is putting the right ‘guardrails’ in place so
that AI serves as a cognitive scaffold, rather than a shortcut that causes harm,”
said Dr. Balasubramanian.
The week also featured workshops, a panel of neurodivergent faculty and staff, and
interactive programming aimed at raising awareness and connecting students with support
resources.
Together, these efforts demonstrate Columbia College’s ongoing commitment to fostering
an inclusive campus where diverse learners can thrive.
