Local GE Revisions

The California Community Colleges Chancellor's Office (CCCCO) approved a revision to the associate degree and general education (GE) requirements. As a result, Columbia College has updated its local associate degree and general education requirements, as outlined below.

This list provides the old and revised local GE subject areas, followed by Local GE FAQs:

Area A: English Language Communication and Critical Thinking will now be Area 1: English Communication
  • A1. Oral Communication will now be Area 1C: Oral Communication
  • A2. Written Communication will now be Area 1A: English Composition
  • A3. Critical Thinking will now be Area 1B: Critical Thinking and Composition

Area B: Scientific Inquiry and Quantitative Reasoning  will now be two different GE Subject Areas:  Area 2: Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning & Area 5: Physical and Biological Sciences

  • B1. Physical Sciences moved to new Area 5A: Physical Science under Area 5: Physical and Biological Sciences
  • B2. Life Sciences moved to new Area 5B: Biological Science under Area 5: Physical and Biological Sciences
  • B4. Mathematics, Quantitative Reasoning moved to new Area 2: Mathematical Concepts and Quantitative Reasoning

Area C: Arts and Humanities will now be Area 3: Arts and Humanities

  • C1. Arts (Art, Music, Theater) will now be Area 3A: Arts
  • C2. Humanities (Literature, Philosophy, Languages other than English) will now be Area 3B: Humanities

Area D: Social and Behavioral Sciences will now be Area 4: Social and Behavioral Sciences

Area F: Ethnic Studies will now be Area 6: Ethnic Studies

What Does This Mean?

Newly enrolled students who do not have catalog rights from previous years are required to follow this newly revised GE Pattern.
