“From Guangdong to Gold Mountain: A Story of Chinese Immigration, Exclusion, and Community”

The “Beyond Gold: Stories Across Cultures” series continued on March 19, 2025. Historian Shannon Van Zant led a talk that drew a full audience of students, faculty, and local residents eager to engage with a deeper, more inclusive historical narrative.

Van Zant framed the story through the journeys of Chinese immigrants who came seeking opportunity during the Gold Rush era, only to face systemic exclusion and hardship. The presentation also highlighted resilience—how Chinese communities in the Gold Rush formed, endured, and shaped the cultural fabric of the region despite adversity.

“I hope that this Beyond Gold series reminds us that including all voices in our history helps us better understand the past and one another. I hope the talk made people reflect on how these underdiscussed histories continue to shape our current understanding of the United States and why they matter for building a more inclusive future,” stated Van Zant.

This series is a partnership with the Tuolumne County Historical Society, Con Amor: Building Bridges, and the California State Parks.
