FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question:   What is a tax return transcript?
Answer:   A tax return transcript shows most line items including your adjusted gross income (AGI) from your original tax return (Form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ) as filed, along with any forms and schedules. It doesn't show changes made after you filed your original return. This transcript is only available for the current tax year and returns processed during the prior three years. A tax return transcript usually meets the needs of financial aid verification.

Question:  Can I visit a Local IRS Office?
Answer:  If online and telephone requests are not available because of address changes or other errors, you may choose to request an appointment with your local IRS office by calling 1-844-545-5640. To find a office nearest you, click on IRS location.

Question:  I am having trouble using ordering a Tax Return Transcript Online.  What should I do?
Answer:
The IRS site uses the U.S. Postal Service address (USPS), which may be different than what appears on your tax return.  We suggest the following if you run into problems:

ADDRESS ISSUES

  1. Have your taxes in front of you and enter the address carefully as it is on your return.  Any punctuation used in your name or address will create an online error.  Replace the following with a space: ' , - . #
  2. If you entered your address as it appears on your return and it doesn't work, try using the standardized version of your address
  3. To get a standardized version of your address, follow the instructions below:

    • Click on "Look up a Zip Code" (make certain your browser is set to allow for pop-up windows)
    • Enter your address and click on "FIND"
    • In the next window, you will see what you typed and what the official USPS address
    • Use the official USPS address to retrieve your IRS data

NAME ISSUES

  1. Have your taxes in front of you and enter tax payer's name exactly as it appears on your federal tax return
    • Please note that spaces count as characters in the IRS system.
    • Make certain you have the correct spacing between numbers and words
    • ANY punctuation used in your name or address will create an online error.  Replace the following with a space: ' , - . #

NOTE: the secondary spouse on a joint return must use Get Transcript Online or Form 4506-T to request this transcript type. Then using Get Transcript by Mail or phone, the primary taxpayer on the return must make the request.
